Senior Irish civil servant starts blog

Brendan Tuohy is Secretary General of the Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources here in Ireland. This would make him one of Ireland’s most senior civil servants.

Furthermore, the Communications section of the Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources has responsibility for e-Commerce, the Group Broadband Scheme, and Communication Development.

Interestingly, I read today that Brendan has started a blog (called Sliabh Luachra)!

Brendan started this blog a few days ago so there are, as yet, only four entries in the blog. The blog doesn’t appear to be work related - the topics covered vary from the Developmental Welfare State to a debate Brendan attended in Trinity College’s Philosophical Society. It is great to see someone at this level looking into blogging.

Welcome to the blogosphere Brendan - and to paraphrase Fr. Ted “Up with this kind of thing!”

Blogging for Business - the review

Last night’s Blogging for Business event was a great success according to all the feedback I have received - this despite a number of setbacks:

  • Richard Delevan rang me to tell me that he had been in a car crash, had missed his train and was going to be late for the event (he was unhurt, thankfully)
  • The atrium in the National Software Centre where these events are normally held was double-booked so we had to hold the event in the Boardroom and
  • The air-conditioning failed so the room was very hot

The meeting kicked off with a fascinating review of the history of blogging given by Maura McHugh. Next up we had Dr. John Breslin of DERI who gave a very comprehensive talk on syndication. Richard Delevan followed with a very entertaining and informative presentation which included wonderful quotes from Jonathan Schwartz:

It’ll be no more mandatory that [CEOs] have blogs than that they have a phone and an e-mail account. If they don’t, they’re going to look foolish.

Robert Scoble:

Tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. If your competitor has a product that’s better than yours, link to it. You might as well. We’ll find it anyway

and Lawrence Lessing:

Famous people have enough space to talk already. Blogging is interesting because of nonfamous people

And then I finished up boring the pants off everyone with my spiel about Search Engine Optimisation!

All four presentations are now available on the IT@Cork website or at least they should be there by the time you read this!

Apple to use Pentium M as first Intel inside chip

I see where eWeek are reporting that Apple’s first Intel chip may be a new Intel Pentium M code named Yonah - due out early 2006.

According to the eWeek article, the Yonah

will be manufactured using its forthcoming 65-nanometer process, will receive a number of tweaks aimed at boosting performance and power management capabilities, Intel said recently. The chip’s twin cores will provide a performance boost while multitasking, for example, but also aid machines running on battery power by shutting down one core to cut power consumption

Well, if it is light, low powered and fast, you won’t hear me complaining!

Live reporting of the Blogging for business event?

The Blogging for Business event is taking place in the National Software Centre tomorrow evening from 6pm as previously reported.

However, I forgot to mention that there is free wifi in the National Software Centre so there is an opportunity there for any intrepid bloggers to blog the event live as it is happenning!

We could even take questions from the blogosphere - now that would be fun!
