O’Reilly’s mean-spirited response

First of all, I’d like to thank everyone for all the supportive comments and posts on the whole IT@Cork Web 2.0 conference vs. CMP/O’Reilly’s legal dogs. I’d love to respond to everyone but as my son Enrique was born on Tuesday morning, I don’t have as much time to devote to this as I should.

CMP/O’Reilly’s have responded on the O’Reilly website and they have faxed us through a document to sign (below).

Is it just me or are they still not getting it? They are asking us to sign a document saying we won’t hold any future events with the term Web 2.0 in the title. If we run an event on Microsoft Windows, would Microsoft would send us a cease and desist letter for using their trademark in the title? Of course not, how is this any different?

And why should we sign a document tying ourselves to that?

O'Reilly's response

UPDATE: - via Gavin I see that Twenty Major has posted an alternative response to O’Reilly’s C&D - Warning - NOT WORK SAFE.

O’Reilly trademarks “Web 2.0″ and sets lawyers on IT@Cork!

IT@Cork is a not-for-profit networking organisation for IT professionals. IT@Cork organises regular information and networking events which are free for its members.

One of these events - the upcoming Web 2.0 half-day conference is the target of a cease and desist letter (below) from the legal team of O’Reilly publishers. Basically O’Reilly are claiming to have applied for a trademark for the term “Web 2.0″ and therefore IT@Cork can’t use the term for its conference. Apparantly use of the term “Web 2.0″ is a “flagrant violation” of their trademark rights!

Ironically I invited Tim O’Reilly to speak at this conference last February and his response (which I received on 15th of February) was

I would love to be able to do it, but my schedule is just too full for an additional international trip.

So Tim was aware of the event in February but decided to wait until 2 weeks before the conference to set the lawyers on us.

As I mentioned, IT@Cork is a not-for-profit organisation and doesn’t have the resources available to O’Reilly - what do people suggest we do?

Edited to correct the time of birth after Donagh Kiernan pointed out in the comments that I mis-typed it!

Enrique Raftery Carnicero was born this morning!

Enrique Raftery Carnicero was born early this morning weighing 6lb 10oz. Mother and baby are doing well, if a little tired.

Welcome to the world little Enrique.

Enrique Raftery Carnicero is very punctual

Enrique Raftery Carnicero is the name we have chosen for our new son. The doctors told us he was due today - May 22nd. My wife, Pilar’s, waters just broke!

We are off to the hospital - it looks like little Enrique gets his punctionality from his father’s side of the family!

Bebo lands $15m in funding

The most talked about and used social networking site in Ireland at the moment is not myspace, it is Bebo. It is mentioned on almost every talk radio show by concerned parents and teachers alike.

Well, I read with interest today on Jeff Clavier’s site and subsequently on Mike Arrington’s TechCrunch that Bebo has landed $15m in funding.

Lots more talk radio time, I suspect!
