Ballmer going soon too?

I see Bill Gates has decided to take early retirement - I hope he has a decent pension plan in place ;-)

Seriously though, this has to be good news for Microsoft. Ray Ozzie who has been named as his successor (along with Craig Mundie), is someone who has a very good name in the software community and if there is anyone who can help Microsoft shirk the poor corporate image they have, it is Ray.

Owen Thomas reckons that Steve Ballmer can’t be far behind and that:

At this point, Ballmer’s associated more with the hard-charging business tactics that led to Microsoft’s antitrust woes and a low stock price that’s sapping employee morale. Whoever replaces him will have a host of problems to solve - but unlike Ballmer will be able to start with a clean slate.

No Gates and no Ballmer, now that’d be a new Microsoft!

Oh to have companies who will pay for expertise

It is amazing to me how Irish companies will do everything in their power to resist paying for expertise.

I was contacted recently by one of the country’s mobile operators. Would I help them see “how we can go about using online communities, blogs etc to [company name's] advantage”?

No problem, delighted to, said I!

The meeting was arranged, the aganda for the meeting was set and I was asked to address:

1) Overview of what is happening in this space
2) Example of companies that have employed some of these different tools and how they are getting value
3) How do you think [company name] could leverage these tools in order to gather insight and create a positive customer experience out of it?

I asked what their procurement policies were, did I need to send in a PO, or what was the story?

What, money? You want money? You must be dreaming. We don’t pay people for their work, they should feel priviliged just to be talking to us, seems to be the attitude.

They seriously expected me to spend several hours preparing for this meeting, travel to meet them in Dublin (3 hours each way) give away all my knowledge of this area, and all at my own expense?

When I said I’d have to charge, they cancelled.

It is not like I was going to cause a massive dent in their profits. I was only asking for a couple of hundred Euro plus train fare - half of which I would re-imburse if more business came out of it.

No, no, no -

our normal vendor policy is that all agencies would have an initial meeting with us to discuss ideas and possible ways to work together in the future

Goodbye.

Yeah, that’s well and good except the outline of the first meeting was more like a let’s see how much information we can suck out of Tom’s head. Then we’ll go away and do it ourselves. Ha ha, won’t he feel silly then?

I even offered to do the initial meeting by conference call free in a last ditch effort to be reasonable. I haven’t heard a word since. Infuriating.

EDITED TO ADD:
I should have mentioned in the post that the carrot that was offered to me by the mobile co. was that there was the possibility of a one day workshop with them if things went well! So I was expected to spend a day and a half between prep, travel and delivery for the possibility of a day’s work.

Digg must be feeling very flattered!

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery - if that is true then Digg must be feeling very flattered right about now!

AOL’s Netscape site is being converted from a portal into a Digg clone! You can see it for yourself at beta.netscape.com for now. It will convert to the main Netscape site soon.

The new Netscape site

The site features the ability to ‘vote’ for stories and a constantly updating, dynamic topbar featuring the most popular stories.

This site already has far more traffic than Digg ever had. As Mike Arrington said:

The fact that AOL is launching the new service under the Netscape brand instead of building out a new property says how serious they are about the space. According to statistics provided by AOL, Netscape serves a whopping 811 million monthly page views - far more than Digg today.

This will now introduce all those users to Digg-like technologies which can only be good for educating users on the possibilities of the live web.

House for sale in Cork?

We moved house recently and are now selling our former house. It is listed in MyHome.ie for €295,000. The auctioneer recommended it be listed at this price to get more people to view it - he thinks we should be able to get €315,000 for it (or more if we are lucky!).

It is a corner house in a good location, recently painted, with 3 bedrooms, a bathroom, guest toilet, a new kitchen (price includes all the kitchen appliances), 3 gardens (front, side and back) and a driveway for a car.

If anyone has any interest or would like to know more, feel free to call/email me or leave a comment here.

UPDATE:
The auctioneer called me this morning to say we have an offer of €305,000

The house is now sold - thanks for your interest.

Is there something in the air?

Om Malik announced today he is leaving his job at Business 2.0 to setup a new business.

Robert Scoble let slip that he is leaving Microsoft to join a startup, at a bloggers dinner the other night.

Tara Hunt announced last week that she’s leaving Riya to go out on her own.

Ben Metcalf has left the BBC to start something new.

Chris Messina posted a couple of months back that he was leaving Flock to go out on his own.

I’m sure there are others I have left out.

Of course no trend would be complete without its exception - Niall Kennedy announced he was leaving startup Technorati back in February and subsequently joined Microsoft!

It seems that all over good people are on the move, primarily from (reasonably) secure jobs into the great unknown that is startupsville! Is there something in the air?

Charlie Haughey dead?

Both the BBC and the Irish Examiner are reporting that Charlie Haughey has died.

For any who are unaware of Charlie Haughey, he is a former Taoiseach (prime minister) of Ireland - one of the most controversial figures in Irish politics since the foundation of the state.

The end of an era.
