Nokia N70 firmware update fried my phone

My phone has never been the most stable but I couldn’t update the firmware because I didn’t have a PC and Nokia don’t believe in supporting non-Windows platforms (despite Microsoft having a ban on its employees buying Nokia phones!).

As I received a PC the other day, I decided now was the time to try to update the firmware and do away with the phone stability problems. Big mistake.

I downloaded and installed the Nokia Software Updater without any problems however on applying the new firmware the progress bar seemed to be stuck at the position below for a good 20-30 minutes.

Nokia Update stalled

It proceeded a bit beyond that but then came to the following message:
nokia updating crash

No matter how many times I try (or retry) it craps out on me. The phone itself won’t startup at all now. Fortunately I backed up the data before I started this process but now I am without a mobile. Damn.

Vista Explorer crash

I found another bug in Vista this morning.

In an attempt to tidy the desktop, I right-clicked on the ppt file Microsoft left on the desktop and chose Send To -> Documents to move this file off the desktop.

Windows Explorer crashed. Reproducibly.

Windows Explorer crash in Vista

And then restarted itself.

Windows Explorer crash in Vista

I dragged the file into the Documents folder and there was no crash!

I then created another file on the desktop and this one could be Sent To the Documents folder, no problem.

I suspect it was a permissions issue or similar on that particular file. Still crashing Windows Explorer is a bit drastic!

I couldn’t screenshot this occurring either for some reason so I had to get my camera and photograph it - hence the blurriness!

Politicians blogs?

I’m recording a radio interview tomorrow morning (Wed 21st) about politicians and blogging. I have long believed that blogging software is an ideal tool for politicians to raise their profile.

I have come across a couple of good politician’s blogs but if you know of a good one, why don’t you leave a link to it in the comments of this post.

Vista really does have driver issues!

Well, the Vaio Microsoft sent me yesterday arrived today! It is a SZ series, core 2 duo with 2gb of ram, and a 120gb hd.

Vaio SZ

It came with goodies like a HSDPA card from T-Mobile - not sure if that will work in Ireland and a memory card adapter for reading SD, XD and MC cards.

Unfortunately it also comes with the driver issues which have plagued other Vista owners who have upgraded from previous versions of Windows.

display driver error

Upgrading would appear to be the issue here as well - the sticker on the underside of the laptop is an XP sticker. It appears this laptop was upgraded to Vista and not all the drivers are ready.

The above error occurred after less than 10 minutes of using the laptop and re-occurred 3 more times in the next half an hour. Oh dear!

Getting a Vaio

Microsoft Belgium rang me yesterday (I don’t think they realised it was a public holiday here!).

I did some consultancy for Microsoft Belgium last November and at the time they asked me if I’d be interested in participating in a program where they send out laptops pre-loaded with Vista. The aim of the program is to get feedback on how the laptop behaves from the recipients. I said I’d be very interested in being involved!

The phone call yesterday was to confirm my address - the laptop (a Sony Vaio - dunno which model or spec yet) is en route with Vista Ultimate and Office Ultimate pre-installed.

To date Vista has received a major panning, even from Microsoft fans and Microsoft Partners. The main issues seem to be how well Vista works with older drivers and hardware. By sending out new machines with the software already setup, many of the issues people have already had will be circumvented.

It is going to be great fun to see how well Vista stacks up against OS X (and the Vaio against the MacBook Pro!).

What should I install first on the Vaio?

Irish foolproof food blog

I’m not a big foodie. Don’t get me wrong, I like food but purely as a way of filling a need (my hunger)! I was at a friend’s house over the weekend. He made a great seafood chowder. He put loads of fresh seafood into it, stock, etc. and sure it tasted great but I’d have been just as happy with a burger and chips. What can I say, I am a philistine!

Still, I had a meeting with Irish food blogger Val O’Connor recently and she told me of her plan to start blogging really basic recipes like how to boil an egg, for example (according to Val, if you pierce the egg with a sharp pin, it won’t crack when it is boiled).

I think this is a spectacular idea. I know when I am home alone if I open my nemesis, Mr Fridge and see all these ingredients staring at me just waiting for me to ruin them, I’ll go to the freezer and get out a pizza instead!

A site where I could find instructions on how to boil an egg or bake a potato in a foolproof manner would do wonders for my diet.

Hurry up and get it going Val, I’m getting hungry.
