“Education only hampers learning”

Last Wednesday I had the very great pleasure of collecting Prof. Hans Rosling from the airport to bring him to the it@cork conference (where he kicked off the day with an inspirational presentation).

In the car, on the way to the conference though Prof Rosling made a comment which I thought was extremely unusual for a university professor. We were discussing someone he knew who has been successful despite not having finished his formal education when he said “Education only hampers learning”!

I think it is safe to say this is quite an unconventional view for a professional educator!

Cubic Telecom forms strategic alliance with Global Roaming Inc

I see Pat Phelan’s Cubic Telecom has announced a “strategic alliance” with Global Roaming Inc who trade under the CelTrek brand.

The press release on Pat’s blog is short on details and pat is travelling at the minute so I’m not sure what exactly the alliance delivers to each company apart from what they say in the release:

The partnership will allow both companies to offer extended geographic coverage and data roaming on their existing products.

From further reading of the release, it seems to get CelTrek a foothold in the European market and Cubic Telecom appears to get some cost reductions out of the deal.

There is no mention of any monies changing hands.

Well done Pat on landing this alliance - looking forward to seeing where this takes you.

Ubuntu deleted my Windows partition!

I installed Ubuntu (a Linux distro) on my Vaio a few months back and loved it. It was fast, it was stable and I felt I was achieving a certain amount of geeky street cred for using it!

Then, more recently there was a new version of Ubuntu released - 7.10. I upgraded to 7.10 and found the experience even better. I booted into the Vista partition on the Vaio less and less.

However, the other day when I booted into Ubuntu my graphics settings were messed up. I couldn’t get the screen to display at full resolution. I eventually decided to re-install Ubuntu.

However, I was unaware that the installer for 7.10 doesn’t seem to recognise Windows partitions the way the previous installer did and sure enough when I re-booted the Vaio after the install my Windows partition was gone :-(

It is not too bad, the only thing I have lost afair is the time it will take to re-install Vista and all the apps I had on the Windows partition. Still, this has put a severe dent in my confidence in Ubuntu.

Conferences can be fun!

I am back in Cork after the Eventoblog conference in Seville over the weekend.

Now I am helping with last-minute preparations for the it@cork conference. It is on this coming Wednesday and it is going to be a real ‘wow!’ event. Apart from the incredible speakers that are lined up, the delegate list is like a who’s who of the techosphere in Ireland. The networking opportunities are going to be superb.

If you plan on going and you haven’t registered yet, do it asap in case you unwittingly miss out!

The Eventoblog conference was great. I didn’t understand most of the talks (my excuse is that they were in Spanish!!!) but I had a fantastic time meeting the Spanish blogging community and the social events which were laid on were excellent.

I’m slightly less terrified about moving to Spain now!

[Disclosure - I'm the Chair of the it@cork conference organising committee]

In Seville for EBE 07

I arrived in Seville early this morning for the Eventoblog España 07 (EBE) conference.

My old friend Shel Israel is here with with his (much) better half Paula! Shel is presenting at the conference. I’m really looking forward to catching up with them socially as well as professionally.

This next few days will also be very useful for house hunting and networking for when we move here permanently next year.

Posting will be light for the rest of the week I suspect!

Fast food lies

I saw fellow CIX director Adam Beecher’s post on fast food, the ads and the reality last night and it reminded me that I had taken similar photos in Supermacs Hueston Station, a couple of months back and never uploaded them.

I dug them out and uploaded them - big difference between the promise and what is delivered, isn’t there?

The promiseThe reality

This always reminds me of the Michael Douglas character in the movie Falling Down!

Shouldn’t they be done for false advertising?
