Aside from blogs on newspapers' sites, independent blogs will often give their personal opinion/summary of a story, then link to an online newspaper article (or several), clearly sending some traffic their way.

If newspapers would allow bloggers to send trackbacks to an article published online, and encouraged their journalists to comment on bloggers' views on the journalist's article, it would greatly complement the relevance and interactivity of their service, and I think, increase traffic to their sites.
