I posted here previously how Yahoo! were making signing up for an account difficult if you were Irish (you had to fake a postcode and their validation code wouldn’t accept most attempts). This affects you if you want to use any of their services, Flickr, Del.ic.ious, Mail, etc.
Well, in a recent comment on my screenshot of the offending sign-up page, Kevin Collins, who works for Yahoo! said that this issue has been resolved:
I’ve been following this internal change, and it looks like it was pushed out to production; the postal code field for Ireland has been removed
Sure enough when I went to the Yahoo! sign-up page and chose Ireland, the Postcode field disappeared:

Kudos to Yahoo! for (finally) fixing this.
My wife Pilar and I have decided to move to my wife’s home town of Seville in the south of Spain next year. This is a decision we have been wrestling with for some time now but this summer’s lack of sun tipped the decision.
We are going to wait until the end of the school year before moving to minimise disruption for our elder son Tomás.
The move will be quite a change.
The biggest challenge, for me at least, will be securing employment in Spain. My Spanish language skills are less than rudimentary! In Ireland I do a considerable amount of consulting to local companies evangelising web 2.0 technologies. This won’t be possible after the move unless the local companies speak English (and very few companies in the South of Spain speak English).
If anyone knows of any good resources for becoming fluent in Spanish in 24 hours (!) I’d love to hear about them. Also, any/all tips or intros to employers in that region would be gratefully accepted.
Tom’s on holidays, I’ll be your host for today. My name’s Frank P, you might remember me from such blogs as “BifSniff.com”,” FestivalShirts.net/blog” and “Aonach.com/chatter”.
Damien asks us what our site stats for Firefox are after reading the results of a survey by XiTi monitor which shows Firefox having 38.6% marketshare in Ireland.
You can read more about the survey and it’s findings on itWire.com
A study of nearly 96,000 websites carried out during the week of July 2 to July 8 found that FF had 27.8% market share across Eastern and Western Europe
With regard to Damien’s question: For BifSniff.com Google Analytics puts Firefox at 39.54% for the month of June – that’s for all traffic not just European traffic (Northern Europe accounts for 50.48% of that traffic with Ireland accounting for 18.59%).
Forbes Madrid are reporting this morning that O2’s parent company, Telefonica have signed an exclusive deal with Apple for iPhone distribution rights in the UK.
This is the second time this rumour has emerged in the last two weeks. Both times from very credible sources.
It makes sense. Vodafone don’t need Apple (and the sales boost iPhone exclusivity would give them) as much as O2 does. This deal obviously doesn’t stop Apple signing deals with Vodafone in other European countries.
I’ll be interested to see who gets distributorship in Ireland!
I’m writing this post in Terminal 3 of Heathrow Airport waiting to board a flight to Chicago (and then another to Vegas) for Microsoft’s MIX07 conference.
I’m looking forward to the conference, the line-up of talks looks really impressive and I’ll get a chance to meet some great people.
What is really cool as well is that Pat Phelan has ensured that my phone charges while I’m there will be minimal! How did he do that? Well, he mapped a Cork number (+353212349915) to my TruPhone number.
Now anyone who calls me from Ireland can call me on the Cork number Pat provided and, as long as I’m in a wifi zone, I will receive the call without incurring any roaming charges. And with Truphone, all outgoing calls to landlines are free until the end of June!
The only time I expect to incur call charges is if I have to call someone on mobile.
Excellent, thanks Pat.
Building has commenced on the CIX data centre – the first fully redundant data centre in Ireland outside of Dublin!
