Tom the reason for the name change back is because most Hotmail users have not converted over to LiveMail - see the market % figures from HitWise. I guess this is one way Microsoft can convince the mass of Hotmail users to convert their accounts over to Live.

My main problem is with a web-app putting the name Windows in front of it.

To me Windows clearly meant "desktop" and not "desktop and web." Now I am not so sure. Is diluting a name a good move?

Hotmail was grand for what it was for, they essentially led the way and deserve some respect for that. And there's no reason why they couldn't bring the brand back to the front by looking at what Gmail and Yahoo Mail are doing and improving on it (embrace and extend, the Microsoft way). But yes, Windows Live Hotmail is a dumb name. Call it Hotmail or call it Windows Live Mail, get off the bloody fence.

Mmm... Gmail does propose a Rss feed (it's far from perfect since you only get the unread mails but it's not too bad)
http://mail.google.com/mail/feed/atom
(you need to be logged of course :))
