Using your Mac for Enterprise Database Development

Thursday, February 24th, 2005

I found a fascinating article on the OSNews site on how to use your Mac for Enterprise database development today by Ken Cluff.

In the article, Ken explains how he salvaged an old mac G4, downloaded/installed various tools and now uses the Mac for his software and database development purposes.

Ken clearly shows that there is […]

New design - WordPress themes

Saturday, February 5th, 2005

I was looking into WordPress themes today and I found a few interesting sites with freely downloadable themes for WordPress 1.5.

I found one called ShadedGrey that I liked so I downloaded it and made it active. I had a couple of issues with its setup and I had to modify the files to get […]

Upgrade from WordPress 1.2.2 to WordPress 1.5 (Beta)

Thursday, February 3rd, 2005

I upgraded my blog from WordPress 1.2.2 to WordPress 1.5 (Beta) today so if you notice any wierdness in this blog (over and above the norm!) you can put it down to that.

The upgrade went reasonably well. First I backed the database and then the remote files following the upgrade instructions on the WordPress site.

Web standards compliance

Monday, January 31st, 2005

Michele mentioned my post listing standards compliant websites in an article on his site this morning.

He correctly pointed out that many development companies think that they can jack up the price when asked to produce standards compliant sites - “Mention w3c standards and the price starts to climb”. Unfortunately, this is often the case and […]

Since I delivered the talk for the Irish Internet Association last Thursday in Mitchelstown, several people have asked me for the names of web development agencies who develop standards compliant websites.

I know of a few Irish web development agencies who develop web standards compliant sites and will list them here - if anyone knows of […]

The IIA (Irish Internet Association) have asked me to give a presentation at a one day E-business Seminar they have organised in Mitchelstown, Co. Cork, in association with Ballyhoura Development. I agreed to give the talk - the title of my presentation is Practical Web Design Advice. I’m recommending the use of web standards, particularly […]

Mac comes of age!

Monday, January 24th, 2005

The Mac was launched 21 years ago today (January 24th 1984).

To celebrate, a German Mac fan has resurrected the video of the launch and posted it on the ‘net. Check out the duds Steve Jobs is wearing.

The site has been Slashdotted so it has been mirrored here.

Well worth checking out if only to see […]

I see on the Korg site where their new Oasys keyboard runs on Linux.

It is retailing for upwards of $8000 - too bad Christmas is just over!!!

Internet Explorer use falling further still

Friday, January 21st, 2005

I note that eWeek are reporting that usage of Microsoft’s internet Explorer has fallen another 1.5% to 90.3%.

Of course, what is amazing, to me, is that over 90% of people are still using internet Explorer!

Still, I shouldn’t complain, a lot of my business these days is coming from people whose PC’s have been decimated by […]
