Why don’t online calendar apps allow importing of existing calendars?

Word on the blogosphere is that Google are developing an online calendar application called CL2 – Michael Arrington of TechCrunch has pictures of the app here.

An online calendar is something I would find very useful – I have loads of information in my calendar on my desktop but I lose that when I go out an about with my laptop. I use Apple’s iCal as my calendar application but I don’t have a .Mac account so I can’t synch my Calendars across the two machines.

30boxes has a facility whereby I can add my appointment info into 30boxes and subscribe my iCal application to that – this is half of the solution I am looking for – this is ok for events moving forward but I have a good few recurring events set in iCal which I don’t want to add again. Also, I often look back over my calendar to see “when exactly did I have that meeting?”, etc. For these reasons, while it is a good start, 30boxes is seriously lacking by not having the ability to import an existing calendar.

I don’t know that Google’s calendar will have this functionality either – I don’t see it in any of the screenshots on TechCrunch but surely they have thought of it – I can’t be the only person to have this issue!

Absolutely! There are so many Web 2.0 apps coming out on the market these days, I’m dizzy with the possibilities, but my Treo has all of the information I need and moving it out of there into a website displaces the data and that’s the real issue here…not the app.

Give me something that works with my Palm OS, my .mac world I would be much happier, but until the dots are connected, I doubt I’ll be moving anytime soon. I’ve got accounts at 30days and just starting to play with it, but it’s not going to integrate and will probably become the flavor of the day in a couple of weeks.

Good thoughts Tom and I always enjoy your Podcasts. Your interviews and subject matter are some of the best on the web! Now if I could just find me some Murphy’s to drink over here in the states.

    Keep up the great work.

    David,

thanks a million for the kind words – sorry I can’t help you on the Murphy’s front – I’ll treat you to one if you ever make it to Cork – how’s that?

    We just added an import

    http://30boxes.com/import.php

We have not yet enabled “writes” with our API but once we do, someone will create a sync program :-)

Our main goal, though, was to give people something so simple that they would abandon their desktop app (or like me just subscribe to my 30B feed so I have an offline version).

    Check out CalendarHub

CalendarHub supports sychronization with other calendar programs such as Outlook, Yahoo Calendar, ICal, and many others using Import and Export. In general, you must export your other calendars and download them to your computer before you can import them into CalendarHub.

Have to agree. Why would you launch 30Boxes without having the capability to take your existing information from outlook? Why doesn’t it take / upload “buddy lists” etc. so that I can see other people, and lets face it, “share my availability” and allow people to make meeting suggestions. If this allowed my company to more effectively see where we were during the week, and book each other into meetings, then it would be compelling. Just a thought.
