Away from the computer ’til the 10th

I will be away from the computer until the 10th of January - have a great New Year and I’ll be posting again (with a vengence) then!

Vint Cerf interview podcast

I published the Vint Cerf interview this evening - Woo!

Wow, Vint is an intellectual giant! I am completely in awe of people of people like him. The interview went really well - he talked knowledgeably about everything from Interplanetary protocol to blogging and podcasting - on my suggestion, he’s thinking of starting a blog next year (2006)! Wouldn’t it be great to be able to say I got the “father of the internet” blogging!

WordPress 2.0 released

The latest version of WordPress - WordPress 2.0 was released this evening - head on over to the WordPress Download site to get your copy.

Well done to Matt, Donncha, and the rest of the team involved in getting this one out the door.

Major reasons to update to WordPress 2.0? Nice Ajaxy back-end interface (not gone on it myself, the Link window is too slow opening, for instance); Akismet - Matt’s anti-comment spam plug-in is built-in; and there is a built-in backup facility which will backup your blog db and email it to you! Very nifty.

Happy holidays

Happy holidays to all - hope you are having a great one!

How to access a password protected isa server 2004 backup

A client of mine had a problem with their ISA Server recently - the HD failed.

Fortunately, it happened on a Sunday and there was a recent backup of the firewall config.

However, the config backup was password protected and no-one could remember the password!

The config backup though is a simple .xml file so one of the guys onsite (Przemek Kwiatkowski - Shrek, for short!) decided to open the file with a text editor and have a look at it. He created another config backup without any password protection, opened it with the text editor and compared the two.

On comparing them he noted that the file with the password protection had the following entry:

<fpc4 :OptionalData dt:dt="int">4</fpc4>

While the file without the password looked like:

<fpc4 :OptionalData dt:dt="int">7</fpc4>

Note the 7 in the file with no password compared to the 4 in the password protected file. Przemek changed the 4 to a 7 in the password protected file.

The password itself is encrypted and looked something like:

<fpc4 :EncryptionPassword dt:dt="bin.hex">c1fd1b2977cb42b2a3aed6933508268c235d535f</fpc4>

When the password line was deleted and the 4 changed to a 7, the file was no longer password protected and the settings were available to import into the server once more!

Zoho Writer fails to impress!

I received an email this morning from an Aravind (a Market Analyst for the Zoho range of products & services apparently).

Aravind asked me to test the Beta of Zoho Writer, an online word processor. I tried it out and wasn’t too impressed!

I have tried and written about online word processors previously and both Writely and WriteBoard are significantly better than Zoho Writer in one very important respect - both worked flawlessly on the Mac!

Zoho Writer fails miserably on the Mac (Firefox and Safari)!

Aravind, if you are going to ask someone to review your product, ensure it works on their preferred platform before you pitch it to them!
