Off to the sun!

I am off for a week’s holiday in the sun with the family to re-charge the batteries.

Back on the 9th.

Don’t break the Internet while I’m gone!

Irish web apps reviewed

David Lenehan has written a great round-up of the Top Irish Web Apps over on Read/Write Web. He seems to have hit on most of the usual suspects (LouderVoice, PutPlace, Nooked, Roam4Free, Pixenate, etc.).

However, the fact that David missed out on a number of up and coming web apps like dbTwang and Touristr only goes to show how difficult it is to keep up with the pace of innovation in Ireland right now.

In the tech world, Ireland is a hot happening place right now.

Blog training course

it@cork are running another Blog Training course commencing on Wednesday May 9th.

I will be giving the training and it is open to members of it@cork for a charge of €50 and to non-members for a charge of €100.

The course will be run over 5 consecutive weeks on Wednesday mornings at 09:30 for an hour each morning.

The course has been sponsored by Microsoft Ireland on the condition that we record the training and subsequently podcast it (!) and that we don’t slag off Microsoft too much!!! I think we can live with those conditions, thanks Microsoft.

If you are interested in participating, you can sign up for the course on the it@cork blog training page (look for the Register link) or call it@cork on 230 7011.

My move from OS X to Vista - Day 4

I know, I know, I didn’t post anything yesterday so this should be Day 5 but I wasn’t using the Vista machine yesterday, I was using the Mac for a Keynote presentation I was giving. Powerpoint has nothing on Keynote.

Today I wanted to run Second Life on the Vista machine but ran into the following error:
second life error

I’m fairly certain that this is a machine specific error and not a general Second Life not running on Vista error however, as I can’t access the Vaio Update page because of the following error:

vaio update error

I can’t update the drivers. :-(

Thanks Sarah!

Sarah Carroll, the uber-organiser of the Events Day Conference wrote me a lovely email this morning to thank me for speaking at the conference yesterday. In the email she said:

You were absolutely terrific, I’ll send you on some quotes later from the delegates so as you know it’s not just me in your fan club :-))

Many many thanks for being there with us, and for your contribution all day long, most particularly your “official” session.

Thanks Sarah, it is lovely to get that kind of feedback.

Over on the Conference blog which Sarah maintains, she has promised to podcast the talks so I’ll put up a link here as soon as they are published.

Eamon O’Brien - great to meet you again!

Eamon O’Brien was a neighbour of mine as a kid. Eamon is a couple of years older than me but we knew each other well. Before yesterday, I hadn’t seen Eamon in around 15 years but his mother and mine were very close so I was always kept up-to-speed on Eamon’s goings on.

In the way that these things happen in a country as small as Ireland, Eamon O’Brien was at the Events Day Conference I was speaking at yesterday and we managed to have a chat, catch up and swap contact info so it won’t be another 15 years before we meet again.

Now, can I get Eamon to blog or join Twitter, or Second Life or some other Social Network so we can stay in closer touch from now on? That’s what this medium is all about, building and fostering relationships.
